![]() ![]() I really hope you take the time to read this. ![]() Someone just has to start it and it has to sound good enough to inspire others to produce more of it. However a new genre could form that owns the 3/4, 5/4 or 6/8 time signature. ![]() You just wouldn't be able to make a track in any of these genres with a different time signature. Most genres, like dubstep, house, drum & bass, moombahton, have a particular drum pattern that is mostly consistent throughout the genre, and it depends on being 4/4. Giving it more thought though, it is possible that a new genre could spring up that is in another time signature. I could see some experimental live electronic act making songs in other time signatures and potentially becoming big but 99% of edm is going to be 4/4 forever. There is definitely experimental electronic music out there in other time signatures but it is never going to become a very popular trend as long as a producers success is gauged by the amount of people spinning their tracks. ![]() It's unlikely that someone trying to make it big would make the majority of their music in a time signature other than 4/4 just because it would not be mixable to the average DJ. I apologize for the long post, but this is a question I've had for a long time and couldn't think of a better place to ask it! Are there any popular sounding artists that are trying to push the envelope - particularly with the usage of odd time signatures? Is this something that would appeal to fans of the scene? Has anyone who dabbles with production tried anything like this? The popular music scene could really use some spicing up, and this would be one way to do it.īack to EDM. He wrote raps in ( ) and even in ( )! I think it sounds awesome. I came across Youtuber Andrew Huang, who tries to push the boundaries with his musical endeavors. It was all starting to sound stale to me - every popular song was in 4/4 (the odd 3/4). To give you an idea of what I'm looking for, I had a similar problem with hiphop music. I've been trying to find some songs with time signatures outside of 4/4 (even a popular EDM song in 3/4 can be hard to come by), but haven't had any luck. Hearing this got me thinking - I would probably like EDM a lot more if some producers broke away from the "four on the floor" mentality, and tried to create something more unique sounding. I tend to like it because it takes inspiration from many of the bands I listen to, all while blending in a genre that I'm not too familiar with and was never very fond of. My opinion on electronic music drastically changed when I came across ( ). It doesn't help that I'm not much of a dancer. If you have listened to any of the bands I listed, you will understand why EDM isn't really my thing. Some examples of what I listen to (to give you an idea) are ( ), ( ), ( ), etc. What I listen to is by no means "easy listening", but I enjoy the technicality and musicianship. I listen to every type of music, but my favorite is metal - the type of metal that everyone seems to hate. I will preface this by mentioning that I'm not a huge fan of the EDM genre as a whole, but I'm always open to changing my view/discovering new artists to listen to. ![]()
